Glada spanjorer

España - Campeone !!!

After 44 years of waiting Spain finally won a big trophy again. Fernando “El niño” Torres will forever be remembered hero in his country after scoring the only goal in the final.

Germany didn’t create any chances to equalize and the Spanish victory was well deserved.
Spain was closer to extend their lead in the end.

Best among the golden players I would pick the captain and goal keeper. Iker Casillas. He was without any doubts this tournaments best goal keeper and he led his team well. The defenders on the other hand didn’t impress me that much. I believe that Spain won this cup mostly because of their goal keeper and midfielders. David Villa scored four times while Torres only scored twice. The second although, when it mattered the most.

Euro 08:
Most charming team: Turkey
Biggest disappointment: Italy
Biggest breakthrough: Andrei Arshavin
Worst teams: Greece and France
Team who just could not score: Austria
Where were you: Cristian Ronaldo
Most missed: Fabio Cannavaro
Best fans: Italy’s and Spain’s before the quarter final

Germany to the final - against?

The turkish adventure is over. The german mannschaft won the semi final after a late winning goal from Phillip Lahm. Turkey played, despite missing half of the squad, maybe their best game in the tournament. They started out really good and should have been in a bigger lead when Germany scored their first for the night. The equalizer from Shcweinstiger came just minuets after Turkey had taken the lead.

Germany turned the game over into their favour but I guess no one was surprised when Turkey equalized, minutes from elimination. But this night was not turkish. Phillip Lahm made the final goal in the last minute and Germany was through to their first final since Euro 96 in England.

* * *
Tonight it is time for semi final number two. Spain or Russia will face Germany in the final and it will be a small sensation if Spain makes it – an even bigger one if it will be Russia.

Both teams played a Euro final in the 80s but Russia did it under name and flag of Soviet 1988. Spain’s last time was 1984 and both teams lost their finals. Soviet to Holland, and Spain to France. Maybe that speaks for Russia, after the quarter final where they beaten Holland.

Russia will miss two players tonight. Central defender Kolidin and goal scorer from the match against Holland, Torbinski. Spain will face their strongest team and we are up for a great match. The teams played each other in their opening match about two and a half weeks ago and Spain won by 4-1. I don’t believe that will be the final score to today. But lets hope for a lot of goals and a exciting game.

Semi final number one

The first semi final in Euro 2008 is upon us. Three-time winner Germany against a Turkey who is missing almost half its squad. Germany are of course big favourites but if there is one thing that Turkey has taught us this summer it is; Never underestimate Turkey!

Fatih Terim have only 14 players available for the nations most important game since the World Cup semi final against Brazil six years ago. As you can understand it wont be the best possible Turkish side on the field tonight.

The Germans on the other hand have got their coach back after the suspension in the quarter final. They are likewise to play the same eleven as they did against Portugal. That means Mario Gomez on the bench and Podolski on the left wing.

The thing that makes this semi final more then just a match is of course all the turkish people living in Germany. Several of the Turkish players have spoken about their desiring will to knock out Germany in a big tournament. Maybe this will be their big night?

Arrivederci Italia

After two hours of football Spain won the quarter final against Italy after penalties. Daniele de Rossi and Antonio di Natale were the unfortunate ones to miss. Casillas saved two penalties while Buffon only saved one, and Spain are through to the semifinal against Russia.

I saw the game among the italian fans close to the pitch and it was a very facinating game, even tough it ended without goals. The tension, the nervous atmosphere and the singing fans made it to a very entertaining evening.

Antonio Cassano was italys best player and was a constant threat from his left wing position. But Spain as a team were faste rthan the italian side and in the end they deserved the victory.
Italy won the last world cup on penalites. I guess that is a little comfort to the team, maybe not tonight but they are still World Champions.

Spanish fans were staying at the stadium singing and dancing. The streets in Wien is quiet tonight. The two teams fans walked side by side and the italians did not seem to dissapointed.

- You are still world champions, said one from Spain to comfort an italian.
- Yes, and you are about to become european champions, was the friendly answer.

Italy lost, but that's the way it goes in football. Spain are facing Russia in an interesting semifinal.

The Carneval in Wien

Wien is a city waiting for the big game tonight. Spanish and italian fans are singing and dancing together, just like they did last night. It is a big carneval and it is sad that one team has to leave the tournamnet tonight. But that is football.

Pirlo and Gattuso are suspended for Italy. Aquilani and Ambrosini are most likely to replace them. Spain are comming with their best team and have this tournaments most dangerous striker, David Villa.

Luca Toni have failed to score this far. Cassano, Del Piero and Di Natale aswell. On the other hand that have been the case before and the italian strikers score when they really need it. In World Cup 82 did Paolo Rossi no goal until the knockout round and then Italy won the whole cup, and Rossi the Golden sho. 2006 Luca Toni didn't score until the quarter final against Ukraine. Also that time became Italy world champions.

Is it finally time for Spain. Or is the tradition to strong to beat? I will not guess a winner since I have picked wrong in every quarter final this far. It's hard not to belive in a great match. Especially when you se and hear fans outside. One of them will win tonight and stay in Wien at least a few days more.

Don't miss the game - it could be a classic one

Russia to the semifinal

What a match. From Russia. They played Holland of the pitch and advanced to the semifinal after a brilliant show. Arshavin, Pavlyuchenko and the others gave the Dutch team a taste of their own medicin. Van Nistlerooy was very close to give Holland the lead in the first half but when Russia scored in the second, the "orange hurricane" was in real trouble.

The truth is that Holland didn't created one single scoring opportunity untill van Nistlerooy put them level again. Van der Vaart had a few shot from distance but Russia was closer 2-0 during the whole second half.

When Greece won the European Cup for years ago they did it almost without attacking. Russia isn't interesting in anything else but attacking. If they win the whole thing next sunday, we don't know yet. But they play this tournamnets most entertaining football.

The fans from Holland don't look to dissapointed. What can they do. They lost against a better team. Some russian fans are singing but the streets are filled with italians and spanish fans. I hope you see it on the pictures, the fans from both sides standing in front of each other singing and dancing together. It is a beautfiul scene.

"Ciao Italia, ciao italia - are the spanish fans singing.
"Soi campione del mondo, soi campione del mondo (we are world champions) - are the italians answer.

Tomorrow we are looking forward to an exciting game. Who will play Russia in the semifinal, Italy or Spain?

Luca Toni?

Holland against Hiddink

Today after Croatias bitter defeat against Turkey there are still some croatians walking the streets here in Wien. The turkey fans have left the city and moved to Basel in Switzerland were they will play Germany for a place in the final.

A lot of spanish fans and some italians are also seen here. Tomorrow night there will be a great quarter final here att he Ernst Happel Stadium between two big footballnations.

Tonight Holland are playing Russia. Russia advanced to the quarter finall after an easy victory over Sweden. 5-0 would have been a more justice result if you look at the game, then the 2-0 that Russia won with. Against Spain they played very good offensively but couldn't do anything about Villa and Torres in Spains quick counter attacks. Tonight against Holland I don't think that they will make the same mistake again.

It will be a tuff game but in the end I think Holland will win. They are brilliant in their attacks and have scored nine goals in three games. I don't belive that even Guus Hiddink can do anything about it.

Hiddink took South Korea to a semifinal and Austrailia to the second round in the World Cup. Now he have taken Russia to the second round for the first time in the nations history. Last time they got this far in a tournament they did it under the name of Sovjet.

Hiddink was the coach of Holland in World Cup 98 and took the team to a semifinal. He could be the worlds best coach of national teams. Russia shouldn't be underrestimated, but like I said - Holland have been brilliant this far and maybe the "orange hurricane" will win their first tournament since 1988. Their star player in that tournament?Marco van Basten - the coach today...

Croatian fans are singing

An extraordinary end

Croatia thought they were thorugh when Klasnic scored in the with one minute left of the extra time. But Turkey came back an equalised seconds before the end. Turkey goalkeeper Rüstü became the great hero when he saved Petrics penalty. Turkey scored every penalty and went on to a semifinal. Croatia on the other hand lost a quarter final they tought they had won. It was an incredible turnover.

In the city I watched tousands of dissapointed croatians. Some were crying. Others was just sitting or standing with empty eyes. But they were strong despite the terrible defeat and got together and started to sing. The turkish fans arrived to the same place and started to sing aswell. It was a beautiful scene. Fans from both sides standing side by side after this tournaments most uncredible match this far.

For some croatians the dissapoinment was to much to handle. The attacked the turkish fans but police seperated the two groups before it became really ugly. The croatians was so many that one could think that they were the houst contry. I could just think about what a great party it would have been if they made it to the final instead.

I am sitting in my hotel room and hear the sound of celebrating turkish fans, but also the sound of ambulances and police cars.

The fan-zone before the game

Croatian fans is all over Wien

I am sitting in the center of Wien and there is red and wihte shirts all over the place. The Croatian fans will win the match in the stadium that's for shore.

Turkey will have to play tonights quarter final without their goal-keeper and some other players too. Croatia are big favourites and I think that they make it to the semifinal.

In Croatias first big tournament they were knocked out in the quarter final. Two years later they took the bronze medal in World Cup 98. Bilic, Ladic, Asanovic, Boban, Proschenecki, Vlaovic, Jarni, Boksic and specially Davor Suker was one of europas best teams when they played. Croatia hade some tuff years after that but now thay have bulit a new strong generation of players. I belive that they have a big chance to reach the final this year. Tonight they will most likely win, and they have alredy beaten Germany this summer.

Wien is warm and beautfiul with 25 degrees and sunshine.

In Wien

After a long and cold night after swedens defeat have I now moved to Wien.

German and portuges fans are sitting in the parks drinking bear and preparing for tonights match.

Germanys coach Löw is suspended and are not allowed to coach his team from the bench. The big question in Germany is if Gomez will play, or if Löw puts up Podolski beside Klose?

Portgual will start with the same line-up that they had in the first two matches.

I am going to bet that Portgual will advance. Maybe the game is not over after 90 minutes, but I think that Portgual have a stronger attack than the germans and can win in the extra time. If the match goes to penalties on the other hand - Germany are huge favourties.

I do belive that Ronaldo will score tonight, and maybe it is time for Klose? If Germany are thinking about the titel they are gonna need two strikers who can score.

Russia destroyed Sweden

Guus Hiddink Russia did a great match tonight and beat Sweden easy with 2-0. Sweden was close to score one time in the first half, when Henrik Larsson hit the post, but except for that Sweden was not even close. Russia could have scored more goals.

Guus Hiddink will face his home country in the quarter final and it can be a very interesting game. For Sweden, it was the first time since 2000 that they failed to make it to next second round in a tournament.

I think that Portgual, Croatia, Italy and Holland are going to the semifinals.

Innsbruck is a yellow town

Tonight Sweden and Russia are playing a decisive game about a place in the quarter final.

I belive that Sweden will win the game, or take the necessry point they need. Russia are forced to win but I don't think they are strong enough. Sweden have a lot of rutin from this matches and haven't failed to make it to the next round in their last four tournaments.

Swedish fans are taking over the city and if Sweden make it to the quarter final it will be a wild, crazy and yellow party here in Innsbruck tonight.

Spain will probably win over Greece, even if they will play with another team tonight. Both Croatia and Netherland showed that they have 23 good players in the squad and I belive that Spain has that to.

Italy, best when they need it

Like I predicted, Italy made it to the finals.

The world champions won their game over France after goals from Pirlo and De Rossi.
France got Ribery injured eary in the game and was reduced to ten men a few minutes later.

Italy will face Spain in the next round, but without Pirlo and Gattuso who both are suspended.
